DP-181, Continental Mine: Freeport-McMoRan Chino Mines Company proposes to renew and modify the Discharge Permit for the discharge of up to 12,000,000 gallons per day of tailing slurry to the Main Tailing Impoundment. The modification will allow for expansion of the Hanover Mountain Pit and provide operational flexibility for the South Waste Rock Disposal Facility. Potential contaminants from this type of discharge include total dissolved solids, sulfate, and metals. The facility is located ½ mile north of Fierro, New Mexico in Sections 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 20, 21, 29, 31, and 32 Township 17 South, Range 12 West, Grant County. Groundwater most likely to be affected is at a depth of approximately 1 to 200 feet below ground surface and has a total dissolved solids concentration ranging from approximately 350 to 1,000 milligrams per liter.
